Total Synthesis of the Antibiotic Branimycin

The first total synthesis of branimycin (1) has been achieved by a highly convergent approach in which the vinyl lithium derivative 3 was added to a cis-decalin ketone 2. The route has 22 steps in the longest linear sequence and an overall yield of 2 %. It is highly stereocontrolled, scaleable, and flexible. MOM=methoxymethyl, TBS=tert-butyldimethylsilyl.
